About Mahabalipuram
Coastal city of Mahabalipuram is situated just 60 kms off Chennai. Being close to the capital, the city is well connected with rest of the state. Tourists are advised to plan their vacation between October and March as the weather remains hot and sultry during rest of the year. The Varaha Cave is a major tourist attraction. Mahishasurmardini Cave is also frequented by the tourists. A stone sculpture depicting the entire universe is symbolic of Arjuna's penance. Another superlative piece is the five rathas or chariots sculpted from a monolithic rock. But it is the shore temple that is thronged by one and all. A Vishnu temple in the middle and two Shiva temples by the sides, this shore temple is a delight to the eye. Keeping the sculpting tradition alive, local artisans have made 3,000 sculptures of wood, metal, cement and brass, which have been kept at Sculpture Museum in Rajaji Street. Places to visit around Mahabalipuram include Tiger Caves, Tirukkalikundram and Muttukadu.
